2009 FIRST Scholarship News – March Update

Greetings Teams:

Good Luck to all of you in your Regional Events!  Be sure to take the opportunity during your regional event to visit the FIRST Scholarship Program table.  Here you can get information about the $9.7 million in college scholarships available to FIRST high school students.  Your Regional may also be hosting a Scholarship Row or College Fair where representatives from colleges are available to talk to you about their campus, programs, and scholarships.  Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity.  And please take the time to thank these schools for offering FIRST Scholarships!

Be sure to check out the FIRST Scholarship web page (visit www.usfirst.org/scholarships and follow the link to the 2009 FIRST Scholarship Opportunities) and check for last minute changes to this year’s scholarship offerings.   Hint:  you can sort the scholarship list by Date Posted by clicking on the Date Posted column header.

Recent changes to FIRST Scholarships:

  • University of Massachusetts Lowell – Engineering has generously increased their scholarship from $4,000/year to $5,000/year.
  • University of Massachusetts Lowell – Sciences has generously increased their scholarship from $4,000/year to $5,000/year.  The application deadline is April 15th.
  • Oregon State University is now offering their scholarship to students in the FTC program as well as those in FRC.
  • Teradata Corporation – the scholarship application is now available.  The application deadline is April 15th.
  • Southern California Regional Robotics Forum (SCRRF) has confirmed their scholarship for 2009.  They are offering two $500 non-renewable scholarships to students on Southern California FRC or FTC teams who will be studying math, science, or technology.  The application deadline is March 30th.

Scholarship Advice

  • Seniors: if you will be attending a college that does not offer a FIRST Scholarship, be sure to check out the following national FIRST Scholarships that can be used at any college and whose deadline dates are still in the future:
    • Raytheon Company (deadline 4/30)
    • ASME-ASME Auxilliary (deadline 3/15)
    • Fabricators & Manufacturers Association Foundation (deadline 4/3)
    • International Fluid Power Society (deadline 5/31)
    • Fluid Power Educational Foundation (deadline 5/31) – can be used at 16 different colleges and universities (see list in scholarship description)
  • There are also some regional/state FIRST Scholarships that can be used at any college or university.  When searching the 2009 FIRST Scholarship Opportunities on-line, be sure to search by both the state in which you live and the state in which you will be attending college (use the Select Area drop down menu, then click GO).
  • Juniors:  Did you know there are still four scholarships that you can apply for this year?  Check out the following scholarships:
    • College of Southern Maryland
    • ITT Technical Institute
    • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/BAE Systems (only available to juniors!)
    • Virginia Tech/BAE Systems (only available to junior women!)
  • Remember that some scholarships go unawarded because no one applies for them.  If you fit the eligibility requirements for a scholarship, go for it!
  • Pay attention to those application deadline dates.  There are over 32 scholarships whose applications are due within the next month.
  • What if you have just missed the application deadline date?  Call the school or organization and ask if they will accept a late application. Some schools will accept applications even after the deadline date.   It certainly can’t hurt to ask!

Go Teams!

Hello FRC Teams!

We are excited about the Dallas Regional FIRST Robotics Competition!
Three requests:

1) Does your team have someone  with a technical background who can  volunteer for the Scorekeeper/Field Power Controller position?
This person will be needed Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Here's the link to the role description: http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedFiles/Community/Volunteers/Job_Descriptions/Scorekeeper-Field%20Power%20Controller%202008.pdf

2) We are looking for someone with a technical background who can volunteer as the FIRST Technical Advisor Assistant (FTAA).
This person will be trained by the FTA on-sight and needed Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
There is no role description for this position.

3) Blair Hundertmark, our Master of Ceremonies, is looking forward to Rockin' & Rollin' at the Dallas Regional.
Does anyone have any men's size 10 1/2 rollerblades…and a hockey stick that they can bring to the regional?

Please let me know ASAP if you (or possibly a mentor or parent who is traveling with the team) can help with these!
Thanks so much and we'll see you all there!

Harold—please send to all Oklahoma (and other teams) that attended the kickoff and/or OKC regional

Message from Team 476,

Team 476 is compiling letters from teams to include in our Chairman’s Award Book.  The theme of our Chairman’s Presentation this year is “A Decade of Inspiration”.  Our main goal is to help teams in as many ways as possible, from the Quick Build Session at the Kickoff, to the Team Summit in the fall, and at the competitions.  Our team made a presentation to the Legislative Education Allocations Committee, and helped bring about the $100K to help start new teams.  We also made presentations to the State Career Tech summer conferences, to the Governor, and have spoken on the Senate Floor, promoting FIRST Robotics in our state.  We were also a BETA test team last fall for the new control system, and our lone student programmer, Jordan, has helped many teams with programming at the competition.  He really enjoys helping the other teams—that is what he looks forward to the most at competitions.

If you feel compelled to be a part of our Chairman’s Book, we graciously invite your input.  Many of you have already submitted your “team testimony” in years past, but would love to include a new letter from this year.  We will be compiling 5 copies of the books on Tuesday, and leave for Dallas on Wed morning.  If you want to send us a letter, or other photo/document to include in our Chairman’s book, e-mail it by Monday.  We enjoyed the OKC regional and are so very pleased that there are now 50 teams in the great state of Oklahoma.  We remember when there was just a small handful of Okie robotics teams!  Now our family has grown!

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation for the Gracious Professionalism Award at the OKC regional—many teams shared our common stories and touched the hearts of the judges.  Thanks for thinking of us, and taking the time to share your stories with the judges.  It was very meaningful to receive this award!

Thanks again—we hope you have a moment to share your thoughts and memories and be included in our Chairman’s Award Book.  We look forward to see all of you at the Leadership Retreat this summer, the Team Summit in the fall, and a few of you at Dallas.

Good luck to the Dallas teams –maybe an Okie alliance will win the Dallas Championship!!!!

Thanks for all that you do for us—and we continue to extend an open door invitation to anyone that needs help or has questions.

Thanks

Tonya Scott

Just a few more days until you are in Dallas competing with your FRC team at the 1st ever Dallas Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, sponsored by JCPenney and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund!!!

Please take the time to read through each bolded area—

1)       Thursday Morning Drop-Off

Directions:  Attached is a map to Moody Coliseum on Southern Methodist University’s campus.

From Mockingbird, go NORTH on Airline.  You will go through a stop light and curve to your left.  The next stop sign is Binkley.  For Thursday morning drop off you will take a left onto Binkley (Moody will be on your left).    Look for the signs and the volunteers directing traffic.

Beginning at 7 am, you can begin unloading your students and materials for your pit along the side of Moody.  Once your students have been unloaded, you may continue on to the parking garages or to the bus lot (instructions below in ‘Parking’)

At 7:45, 3 members of your team (1 adult minimum) will be able to enter GATE 3 (please look for the sign and line up outside the door).  You can un-crate your robot at this time.  In your pit you will find your crate and instructions on your table.  If you have any issues, once inside, please go to the Pit Administration table (next to the curtain).

At 8:30, the remaining team members and the contents for your pit will be allowed to enter through the loading dock (no stairs—so you will be able to roll your items).

2)      Parking

a.       Cars, Suburbans (no trailers, etc)à On Campus Parking ($5)

                                                              i.      There are 2 parking garages (labeled as P on the map):  Moody Garage and Binkley Garage.

1.       (Binkley will be closed Thursday at noon for the duration of the competition.  Please pass Binkley and take a left on SMU Blvd. and turn left into Moody garage or take a right on Binkley Rd. and a left into Binkley Garage).

ii.      Parking is $5 per day (you may not come and go or it will charge you again)

b.      Busses, Suburbans (with trailers, etc.) à Off Campus Lot (Free)

                                                              i.      Groups can park at the Mockingbird Dart/bus station and take the “Pony Express Dart Bus” to campus (free bus ride).

ii.      Suggestion:  Drop the students off at Moody and then park the bus at the lot.

1.       Directions: If you take Central Expressway, Exit Mockingbird and head East, the bus station (on the left, directly following the restaurants) has free parking.  The location is Mockingbird and Warcola and this is a stoplight.  I have included the bus schedule on the link below for you to review the direct buses that run from Mockingbird station to SMU every 15 minutes.

2.       http://www.dart.org/schedules/busschedules.asp?zeon=route768

c.       It is spring break for the SMU undergrad programs, but the campus is not closed and the SMU Police will be ticketing cars

3)      Dean Kamen to speak at the Friday Opening Ceremonies!

Yes—Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST, is coming to the Dallas Regional!!!!

He will be speaking on Friday morning at 9 am at the Opening Ceremonies!!!  Please be prepared to be out of the pits and in the stands!  Also, invite all coaches, mentors, parents, sponsors, and supporters of your team!!

This is a huge honor and does not happen every year!

4)      Friday Night Team Social

a.       Friday from 5:30 – 7:30 we will have a team social directly following the Closing Ceremonies directly outside of Moody!

b.      Southwest Airlines and the North Texas Planning Committee, the sponsors, are providing Mattitos Fajita Bar (voted best Mexican food in Dallas http://www.mattitos.com/index.php), various bounce houses, and a DJ!  All you will need to bring is a blanket to sit on!

c.       Coaches:  Dinner is free!  When you register your team at Pit Administration on Thursday morning, please provide a head count and make sure that you have one ticket per team member eating.  If you choose to bring your own picnic dinner, please let us know at that time as well.

If you have any questions—please feel free to contact me at lweldon@usfirst.org or by phone at 214-273-3707.  Otherwise, please be safe with your travels and we will see you Thursday morning!!!!!

Subject: **FIRST EMAIL**/Dean's 2009 Homework Update

Greetings Teams:

During the FRC Kickoff this year, Dean Kamen offered a homework assignment to every student – to assist FIRST in building both a current participant and an alumni participant database for FIRST.

Starting today, you can complete this part of Dean’s Homework (Part 1) by registering at:

http://firstcommunity.usfirst.org/

This site will allow the FIRST Community to stay connected. Whether you are currently active with FIRST or not, you can stay connected through this site. Signing up only takes a few minutes, and is free.

Please encourage former team members from your school or organization to sign up as well.  The site shows the number of people signed up by state….so help your state surge ahead in participation!

During Week 1 Regionals, Dean added a Part 2 to the Homework for this year. As you know, the education of elected officials about FIRST is an ongoing process.

Part 2 of Dean’s Homework is to continue to contact your Senators and Congresspeople and invite them to this year’s FRC Events.
(Read the full assignment online.)

Post your invitations and the responses in Dean’s Homework Forum

To help you with the assignment, FIRST has created "Dean's Homework Forum" in FIRST Forums, where you will find instructions, access directories of elected officials, copy suggested wording for your introduction, and see quotations from Dean, Woodie, and others that you might choose to use in your invitation.

We also have set up Forums for each state so you can post your invitations, and additional forums for responses (Acceptances and Declines).

Go to "Dean's Homework Forum" to get started, or to post invitations you already have sent!

If you want to post your invitation and don't already have a FIRST Forum username and password, click "Register" just below the FIRST logo.  And if you have questions about the assignment, you can post them in the Homework Questions forum.

Go Teams!

Hi Everybody,

Here is the link to a list of free science and math camps at Oklahoma college campuses throughout the state.  Some are commuter, but some are residential.  This is a great opportunity for middle school and high school students to spend a week on a college campus, work with Phd level professors and graduate students, and learn more about science and math in a fun environment.

My own children have been, and when Lauren was a freshman in high school she met her future roommate at OSSM at a math camp at OCU!

Please get the word out to our students.  The camps are free to students, and some even pay a stipend. It's such a good opportunity, and a rare one for our students.

Thank you, Scott, for your encouragement.  I know some of the team was disappointed that we didn't get into finals... BUT I am proud of you!  We accomplished a lot before competition and learned a lot at competition, which we will put into practice at Dallas.

We finished up as an alliance captain, which only 1/5 of the teams did at OKC.  We were in the top 20% of the competition.

Consider the odds that were against us and the luck of the draw during seeding matches, and we did great.

Also, we were among the highest ranked teams in scoring, and even outscored some of the teams that placed higher.

I am very, very proud of our team and I know we did well.  We have a lot of hard work to accomplish before Dallas, so let's keep working and moving forward.
